Baby Bottle Cookies

babybottlecookies1I love baby bottle cookies for a baby shower favor!!!  I have seen so many cute version of baby bottle cookies adapted to the theme of the baby shower.  For this order I kept the cookies very simple.  The shower was simple, pinks and whites and just simple cookies were requested.  Here is a summary of how I made the baby bottle cookies.  So adorable.  Just coordinate the color of the baby bottle cookies to the color theme of the party.  The baby bottle cookies look adorable in a bag with a matching bow.

Here is a summary of what you need to make baby bottle cookies.  This is such a simple and pretty cookie. I love seeing all the amazing cookies out there but find I am always drawn to simple cookies, such as these baby bottle cookies.

Step 1 : Baby Bottle Cookies – gather supplies

To begin start digging through your cookie cutters to find a baby bottle cutter.  I have no idea where mine came from, but I know you can by just about any cookie cutter online.

Step 2 : Baby Bottle Cookies – Cut shapes and bake cookies

I usually make dough ahead of time and freeze it in a sheet between saran wrap.  This saves so much time when having to decorate a lot of cookies.  Keeping the shapes very cold in the freezer keeps them from spreading too much in the oven.  Again, here is my favorite sugar cookie recipe.

Above shows a sheet of cookie dough that I have ready in the freezer.  Let the dough warm up slightly before cutting the baby bottle cookies… believe me if you are in too much of a rush you can really hurt your wrists!  I actually place the shapes back in the freezer before baking so that spreading is kept to a minimum.  Bake the baby bottle cookies following your recipe’s directions.

Step 3 : Baby Bottle Cookies – Prepare Royal Icing

Making the icing sometimes feels like it’s own project!  When I want the most detailed work I make regular royal icing, but for these baby bottle cookies I used royal glaze icing because it dries slightly softer than regular icing.  Either recipe works great!  For outlining the icing should be thinned until it makes soft peaks.  The flooding consistency icing for flooding should flow like honey.  A medium consistency icing does not hold a peak but is thicker than the flooding icing.

Royal icing checklist:

  • Pink icing, thicker outlining consistency, in a piping bag with a size 1 tip
  • Pink icing, thinned to flooding consistency, in a plastic tube for flooding
  • White icing, thicker outlining consistency, in a piping bag with a size 1 tip
  • White icing, thinned to flooding consistency, in a plastic tube for flooding
  • Yellow icing, medium consistency, in a piping bag with a size 2 tip, for outlining and flooding

Step 4 : Baby Bottle Cookies – Decorate the Cookies

Once the baby bottle cookies are baked and the icing is ready the fun begins!  Usually for me its after pm when the house is quiet and the kids are asleep.  I finally get to decorate the cookies!  Yay!  Here is a photo summary of making the baby bottle cookies.

With this baby bottle cookie I decorate in the order show above to give the cookie a bit of dimension.  1) outline the base of the nipple in pink and immediately flood with the thinner pink flood icing.  I usually do this to about 8 cookies at a time. Sometimes I am lucky to have one of my daughters help me with the flooding :).  If you are in a perfectionist kind of mood use a toothpick to blend the line from the outline with the flood icing.  2) Outline the upper part of the nipple in yellow and outline the white base of the bottle in white.  Immediately flood with the upper portion with the yellow and flood the lower portion of the bottle with the white icing.

Once the cookies are set (about 30 minutes in my dry climate) I add lines to the pink portions of the bottle cookie.  Last I add the details to the side of the bottle with the white icing.  This is a great opportunity to customize or add details to go along with the baby shower.  It would also be cute to add a baby’s name or any other design.

I love making baby bottle cookies!!! So so so cute!
