How to make Mustache Cookies
My kids really wanted to make mustache cookies for Father’s Day. We found a perfect cookie cutter at a local cake decorating store. Not too big, not too small. The kids want to make them all black. Sometimes I use black icing for details, but I try to avoid it for flooding an entire cookie. It takes A LOT of food coloring to get a true black. For these cookies, instead of flooding the entire cookie in black icing, I first used a spatula to add thinned royal glaze icing in white. After the cookies were dry, I airbrushed the mustache cookies with black airbrush spray. This makes it so just the outermost layer is black, and not the icing throughout. Step 1 – How to make Mustache Cookies – prepare dough and bake the mustache cookies
We decided to go with chocolate rolled cookies for the mustache cookies. We love the flavor and thought the look of the darker dough would be perfect in this case. The black airbrush color would blend much better with the chocolate cookies than it would with a vanilla cookie. The recipe I use for chocolate roll out cookies can be found here. Use whatever recipe you are familiar with. This recipe works for me!
Step 2 – How to make Mustache Cookies – prepare icing for the mustache cookies
For these mustache cookies I am keeping it very simple. All I need is some royal glaze icing in white, thinned to a honey like consistency. When the icing is just right it will smooth as it dries. It is so nice not having to make tons of icing colors when making these mustache cookies. I used my favorite royal glaze icing recipe, that can be found here. I love that the icing is always soft when you bite into it. You could also use traditional royal icing for these mustache cookies, the recipe for regular royal icing is found here.
Step 3 – How to make a Mustache Cookie – Decorate the Mustache cookie with an off-set spatula
Decorating these mustache cookies is so simple! I use an off set spatula to carefully spread the royal icing onto the cookie. Because I will spray the cookie black later on I do not have to worry about the icing being perfect around the edges. I have found that I can still make pretty cookies when working quickly.
Step 4 – How to make a Mustache Cookie – Spray the mustache cookie black
Allow the cookies to dry overnight and spray the cookies black. So simple! I love house these mustache cookies are nice and smooth. I use an airbrush with airbrush spray to finish decorating these cookies. I make a lot of cookies so I could justify purchasing an airbrush. If you only make cookies on occasion you could purchase a can of Wilton edible spray for decorating. These would super cute on a stick with a bow on the end. My kids loved delivering these mustache cookies to neighbors on Father’s Day.
